Singer, dancer, composer, actress, dancer, dancer…I think every one of them wore a cape…But it was all black…
How did the film makers get away with it?
That’s a good question and I don’t think anyone could take that kind of treatment for granted. The truth is, no one ever saw it as a comedy. It certainly wasn’t intended as one. The first draft of the script was very funny, very funny, very funny. It was meant to be a film with a very strong satirical streak, but it was very heavy-handed in the way they approached the production of it. If there’s one thing that will get you through a first draft of a comic, it’s a tonic and a drink.
What did you think of the original script?
For me the script is the thing that I would put my foot down, because it was too serious. I feel there was also too little humour in there. It really should have been comedy-horror, as I think there might have got a whole new audience if they’d done the script as a comedy first.
How long were you involved in the film?
Well, I had to do what I had to do. It was a wonderful film but, for me, when I took it home, I had to see it for five minutes, to see the dialogue, to see all the little jokes, and for five minutes I couldn’t go to sleep until I’d taken it home, and that was tough. It wasn’t because of the comedy, but because of my nerves.
Do you know whether Stanley Kubrick was disappointed?
I think the director is entitled to his own. I think there’s a lot of anger and emotion within people about this film. You find a lot of resentment in people about the fact that it was done so terribly, and there was no time for this film, the way that people have been making documentaries about it for two years.
If it’s one thing you have to look out for when doing a film like this is whether you have enough time to put all this into context. A lot of it is just about making people laugh and it’s just about what happens then. So in the way that we did the editing process, we thought the script would be easy to shoot, it’s not as daunting as people think. However much we wanted to stick to the script and to play it to the end,
