The world has been rocked by a series of deadly terrorist attacks in recent months that have sent shockwaves through the Middle East and beyond, but most Americans seem mostly oblivious to the threat of homegrown terrorism in their own neighborhoods.
The statistics aren’t as alarming as a terrorist attack in the United States, but they may still be troubling. According to the Global Terrorism Database, a project of Thomson Reuters, a report released Thursday shows that a third of US residents have encountered violence at some time, including attacks on civilians, property break-ins or property theft, or drug-related offenses.
And it’s even worse in some places, including Virginia in the US, the District of Columbia and South Virginia in the nation’s D.C. region.
At a congressional hearing on Thursday, US senator Richard Burr, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, told reporters that in 2015, the US had seen a “significant uptick in violent crimes against US citizens.”
“Over the past decade we’ve seen over 50 incidents of non-fatal violent crime against Americans in the United States,” Burr added. “We’ve seen them in large cities, but we’ve also seen them in smaller towns and small towns and small towns across the United States.”
“That is frighteningly out of line with other advanced countries,” Burr declared.
Burr also noted that in the past year, there were over 100 incidents of terrorism, with the majority of them being terrorist related. “It’s been more of a spike than anything,” Burr continued. “It is something we need to be concerned about.”
Over the past decade, a spike in terrorism has been observed in several regions, including the Middle East.
In the US, a growing percentage of people have died in terror attacks; in 2015, more than 100 Americans lost their lives around the globe, according to FBI data.

Terrorist groups such as ISIS have claimed responsibility for numerous attacks worldwide. For example, a March attack in Paris was claimed by ISIS. In another attack earlier this year in Brussels, terrorist Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel was shot dead by police after a four-hour standoff.
