The answer is yes to both of these questions. However, as an academic I always prefer to think of grant awards as being a process that will yield benefits to the university, the individual, and the academic sector. This is because, although these are all important, the most important outcome will be the knowledge that is shared.
At fafsa, we are actively exploring partnerships with industry to bring more students from the UK, US and Ireland into the field of information security. This should not merely be the case, however, as we have a long-standing reputation in academia for our research and expertise. As an undergraduate, I had the amazing opportunity to spend an outstanding part of my year at the RSA conference in Montreal doing research on the security of the Internet of Things, which is currently under-developed.
In the same year, I helped to introduce the FIPS 197-2 standard into the C language, which is already widely used in the computer industry.
What is the scope of grant work at fafsa?
My research focuses on the design and implementation of new security models for the Internet of Things. This can include devices such as security sensors, networked medical devices and smart power management systems, to name a few. If you are a researcher working on a new paradigm in security then there is an active project where you could help to design and implement an algorithm to enable that paradigm. The work is part of our project portfolio that we call the Digital Life Projects or DGPs.
What sort of projects could the research group do?
The design and research are already underway as part of our DGPs to improve security in digital life systems via new designs. These include projects related to the embedded web and connected devices, to name a few. I would suggest you give a read to the work we are doing and see where it leads, but the main thing is that the people I work with and the challenges we face, have a long life ahead of them and will help build the future.
Thank you for your time and look forward to hearing from you shortly.
I appreciate you taking the time to share your insights.
