It’s actually quite easy. I’ve seen a lot of people doing it with different types of puppet, and they end up in the same place because they use the same techniques but just not the move the same moves.
What are some basic tools you would recommend a person pick up that they can use for some simple puppery? A few more tools will be helpful to get you up and running.
A rubber mallet, a ruler and a tape measure.
You have two choices for your materials. When it comes to rubber mallet, you can pick one of two. You can pick one that will hold up to a mallet head. If not, you can pick one that will work fine.
If you can find a tool that looks like a mallet head with a hammer head for your material, you are golden. You should pick one that looks similar.
If you aren’t going to use it that often, you can get a stick, or you can get the long skinny sticks that make something like a spindly little puppet.
You need to have your tool for your material, and your stick for your hand. They must be separate tools. That way, when you are just about done, you have two sticks you can pull to get your puppet moving.
Have a good sturdy tape measure. If you do hand-spindling, you need to know how big the parts are going to be.

You need to have some tools for this kind of thing. And if you don’t have those basic tools in a bag, you won’t be able practice. What this means is. It requires your hands to be strong. It requires your arms to be strong. It requires you to have patience and a plan. And there’s no better way to learn than with puppetry. And I mean really get it together. Do some practice. Just practice. Don’t look at a page. Just practice.
