What kind of makeup do you use? I always put paint on my face. It’s just a formality and it really brings to life the person I am. If you have to use eyeliner or eyebrows or everything, then you’re creating a person.

What kind of music do you listen to? I just like the Rolling Stones. I would go and listen to a Mick Jagger or an Eric Clapton record when I grew up. I loved those guys.

What did the ’50s mean to you and do you still live in the era? It was always kind of a dark time in my life. There was lots going on during the war. I went through depression and things like that. I really had a lot going on in my life and had to focus on things at the time. I also felt like I was taking advantage of my parents. We weren’t working together very much. They weren’t in as much of a rush to invest money and time.

I was able to build a house and have kids. So I always had kids around, which was really cool. I went to high school at a Catholic school. I didn’t get really close to any of my girls until I was 20 or so. I think one of my biggest childhood dreams was to go to college and have my own kids. It wasn’t going to happen until a couple years ago. [Laughs.]

What’s your greatest creative challenge? The biggest creative challenge I’ve had to deal with is my relationship with my parents. That’s how I met my husband, for sure. So that’s been a huge challenge in my life. I don’t remember when I finally realized that I had parents, but it just seems like I have been living with my mom and dad, which feels a little bit like I’m living in another life.

What do you love most about being a puppeteer? I just always feel like I’m just a puppet. There is no sense of a life apart. I like dressing up. I like playing with my kids and being around with my friends
