Well, he’s very, very rich. Not only has he donated about $1.28 million to Democrats and another $1 million to Republicans, Dunham has raised more than $1 million in small-donor contributions since he became mayor in 2010, according to The Associated Press.
Dunham’s campaign website proudly offers a list of his top contributors, such as the former Clinton family member Marc Mezvinsky, with whom Dunham co-founded a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that funds veterans’ groups. It’s unclear how much of Mezvinsky’s $3 million in donations has been spent on campaign contributions to Democratic candidates, but he certainly is helping Dunham out with his contributions. In addition, the Los Angeles Times reported recently that Dunham and his wife, Tipper “Pat” Dutcher, are among one of Washington’s top fundraisers.
Downtown Los Angeles
Los Angeles is the nation’s most expensive city for a mayoral campaign. After spending the first 16 years of his political career in state legislature, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has used his political clout and personal wealth to fund campaigns and political action committees. He has raised more than $22.4 million for his current campaign, and he may spend even more, given that he is being challenged for his second two-year term by former L.A. City Councilman Paul Koretz.
Koretz hasn’t raised much in donations for his campaign, yet he’s already made headlines because of his opposition to the new cable development in South L.A. Villaraigosa is opposing the planned 478-unit housing development on the edge of L.A.’s downtown. He’s saying it’s unacceptable to provide affordable housing in a city “which is a city of opportunity,” and Koretz is saying it’s unacceptable to help the developers pay for them.
With $6.2 million raised to date, Koretz is a distant third to Villaraigosa, with about three times more campaign cash.
The mayor’s campaign has spent the time and effort raising that money well. In addition to his $3 million from top-of-the-line donors, they have been spending hundreds of thousands of dollars trying to make an impact on their own behalf and are working closely with labor unions to get voters to the polls for the June 7 primary.
“This guy should have a lot of heart, and so many good friends,” Dwayne Williams, who is a union organizer
