A good quality instrument produces a clear sound, regardless of the style of playing and the type of fretwork used. The sound comes from the strings vibrating by the strings themselves.

Fretwork is made up of five different types:

The flat-top (or no-fret)

The curved top (sometimes called the “hollow-top”)

The open

The round-top (sometimes called “round-hole”)

The oval-top

The oval-hole was invented by violin maker, Richard Schick, in the 18th century. He did extensive research to provide the most precise fretwork that the guitar makers had ever used. The shape, length and spacing of the fretwork helps produce the optimum level of tone for each sound. The fretwork consists of four different parts. If we have four strings on a string instrument, the instrument will produce three different notes using different parts of the fretwork.

Some of the parts shown are from a fingerboard:

1. The fingerboard is a rectangular piece of wood (often made of wood or glass, or carved from ivory, stone or silver). A typical fingerboard is 14 to 13 inches (35-40 cm) in length.

2. The edges of the fingerboard are rounded (or curved) making the fingerboard more stable.

3. The edges of the fingerboard are generally smooth or smooth and rounded; however a few instruments (eg. the violin) have rounded edges. Round edges and smooth edges both produce the same tone.

4. The fretwork used is different from one fingerboard to the next. If the fingerboard is flat-top, it will produce the highest pitch. The edges will produce a low pitch. Most instruments have one flat-topped fingerboard and one curve-topped fingerboard. It is this slight variation in the edge profile that gives a fingerboard its sound and tone. The curved edge is usually used for the tone of the note.
