The violin is by far the most difficult instrument to learn. In order to master it, you have to spend time with it, you have to understand its anatomy and the way it vibrates. Learning to play the violin is not a matter of sitting down and playing it. You have to be practicing several days a week. You also have to learn how to control a violin and your position, which has to become comfortable over time.
Is it your favorite instrument?
Yes, I have been fortunate to have been able to play my violin and it has been my love-child. It was given to me from my father, who played it from his grandmother. I have always loved the beauty of the instrument and it became a symbol of my dad’s memory. This was when I was very small and only about 4 years old.
Do you have any particular interests?
I love to explore new music. But I get a lot of pleasure playing for others. For me, a good friend is an actor. It is good to have different interests than just violin. It allows me to be more in touch with the world around me. The violin may seem to be a piece of equipment but it is a tool for me to connect with the world.
What makes the violin special?
It is an instrument for the heart that produces deep emotion, deep satisfaction, deep joy and the ability to capture someone’s heart. Even someone who thinks they have no musical talent can become part of the world of the violin.
Do you still have a passion for the violin?
I do. But the passion is a different thing than the instrument. I still have to learn to put the emotion back into the instrument.
How many violins were you given?
I was given my violin at one-and-a-half years old and it gave me incredible pleasure but it also gave me a lot of loneliness and confusion. To my great disappointment I lost my mother in 1997. It was a terrible blow. My grandmother was a wonderful violin player. She made me hold up my violin to her and she showed me a lot of things that were not supposed to be there. My father told me not to play the violin if he could.
