Yes, and it’s not just the amount of thought and creative output that they do. They have unique personalities so it’s not just that they have a certain voice and a certain style.
When you look at an artist like Kendrick Lamar, it’s really hard to tell that he’s from the Bay Area. He sounds very American. It sounds like him from the Bay—not like the Bronx. And then I’ve done shows at UC Davis that he’d never played before, so I’m just guessing. So, we’ve had shows here or there.
There are lots of weird stereotypes about hip-hop artists. In my opinion, they’re all interesting in their own way.
Yeah, because it’s so weird out here. [laughter]
Where are you from?
I’m from South Central, and here we only have the best things about you. You don’t really have the best schools, but you do have the highest unemployment, so you’ve got a good system in place that allows you to make it.
Well, do you just want to make music? Or do you have a passion for teaching people?
I’ve got a passion for teaching, and it has taken me two years of learning to be a certified artist. [laughs] But I’m in the learning process.
I read that a lot of your favorite producers have been working with KRS-One. How did that come about?
I’ve been working with him for quite awhile, and it’s just one of those situations where you meet someone who makes music that you like, and then they go out and meet people like Lil Wayne. You just get a nice connection. [laughter] Then somebody happens to be a KRS-One fan, and then you just meet a friend.
That really was your first love.
Yeah. [laughs] This has been the biggest blessing of my life, working with one of the best. [laughter] That’s like, in the back of my mind: “Hey, I’ve got the ability to make music, but it would be so cool to be working with him.” [laughs]
One of my favorite things about KRS-One is how creative he is. I remember a time that I read somewhere online that the new album, the sixth album, is called “Tape Tapes.” In the liner notes, he sings “Tape Tapes,” and it seems like he wants people
