“I can’t do it without reference. It’s the nature of my position. I work on a computer. Everything I do is in my head and in my hands, because that’s why we’ve developed the technology. You can see what I’m doing, but you still need a little time to take it all in, and then I’m working on it. It’s pretty much my job.”
The other thing that strikes me is that a lot of the writers who were once so confident that they could do things like that, now are saying, “Well, I can’t. I can’t do these little things that I was doing that were so easy. I have to be able to actually get it done, and I have to be able to do it fast enough that nobody else has to worry about that. And that’s the thing. The more you worry about it, the more you’re taking the focus off of the actual work.”
You mentioned work, and the thing that’s so great about that is that you have to look at the big picture. You have to make everything bigger than what’s happening on this show, because otherwise you just become just another writer in a world of other writers. You’re just doing whatever you’re going to do to get it done. And it’s not like you walk in and you’re writing, “Oh my gosh, I have to get this out there.” You write whatever you need to do to get it out there, and you try to do things to get it out there.
What does that mean for you as the voice actor, and your ability to do this stuff?
“It’s something that I’ve grown to love. It’s like a gift. It doesn’t matter how crazy it feels or how hard it is. In some forms you can’t really do anything about it, but in other forms, it gives you a sense of just, “Wow, there are a lot of people out there that really want to know about this. I’m getting an audience out there who might want to hear it myself.” That’s been so important to me, and also to the people who come after me, because now their job is just to deliver what I hope are the good moments. It’s so much less about me. It’s not about me and how hard I worked on it—which I know can come down to me feeling like it’s the greatest job in the world. It’s about you and how you can
