The U.S. economy will expand at a 2.3 percent rate in the second quarter, revised from the prior estimate to show growth at 2.0 percent, the Commerce Department said Friday.

The numbers came on the heels of last month’s disappointing second-quarter GDP report, that revised second-quarter gains down by 0.7 percent.

In its report Friday, the Commerce Department revised down its estimate of second-quarter consumer spending to an annual rate of 2.2 percent.

The third-quarter estimate came in well below the Commerce Department’s previous estimate of 2.4 percent.

Revenue climbed 2 percent to $2.55 trillion, or 2.8 percent from the prior estimate before taxes and other items were taken into account.

Gross domestic product grew at the lowest pace since the third quarter of 2009 and just below the economic growth rate in the first three months of this year.

The growth rate in the second quarter of last year was revised to an annual rate of 1.3 percent. While not as strong as the two previous quarters, it is still above the 1.0 percent growth rate recorded in 2013.

The new estimates are based on a survey of a larger number of businesses. The Commerce Department is scheduled to release a fourth-quarter GDP report later this month.
