There are many different ways to learn how to paint, but the general way is to read about the basic techniques and see how to perform. Most beginner painters use the techniques in painting books and magazines, and then move on to the real learning process of learning to paint on your own using tools and methods that are very similar to those in paintings you’ve read about. You might also use photos in your tutorials of how to practice with the right technique and tools.
How do beginners learn from mistakes?
Sometimes you can see a mistake by looking at the technique and then realizing it isn’t the way to do it, or you can see an error in the way you are doing it and you can fix it the next time you want to paint. Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and sometimes someone can give you an answer so that you find ways to improve.
For example, imagine you are painting something and you find an airbrushing technique that you don’t like, or a way of applying the technique that is too messy. Someone might suggest you just learn to make something the way they do it.
Another useful time to ask a question is when you begin to see mistakes, especially when learning from mistakes. As you see mistakes more, you’ll find yourself improving faster.
What’s your best piece of advice for someone wanting to learn to paint?
Don’t just sit back, and allow yourself to just brush in place and hope something looks nice. Instead, make a project of doing something, then putting it off until you want to do it. Make it a project of getting better, and your skills will develop.
And finally, if you make things better, you’ll get better at painting in the process.
Can you tell me about the first time you ever painted?
If you’re like most people, the first time you ever painted was probably doing it in a child’s painting class. The first time you saw a painting, it was the most powerful thing you’ve ever seen — and you didn’t even have an inkling of what it was.
Now, if you paint like that, then your learning probably starts when you meet the teacher you wanted to paint for. Once you meet the teacher and start painting things that you can admire with your own eyes, the learning process has already begun.
