On the first day of class, I would show you a very brief visual statement and then you’d decide on your own for your own style and then you could pick up your tablet and start sketching. It wasn’t so much a real thing as a lot of time to get the fundamentals of drawing right.
Then, once I showed you everything, you’d just do it. We went from a three minute concept to a 60 second piece.
How does it differ from a professional drawing course?
My favorite class is from my brother. You pick your style and you make a lot of choices. I like that when you show me your sketches, and I’m giving you examples—I’m learning so much. It’s really exciting and I really find it an easy way to learn. It’s my way of self-education.
Are there artists on there that I know are super-talented but I can’t draw?
Oh man, it’s like a lot of people. Everybody who takes this is super talented and I love the process. I have a lot of admiration for the artists. They’re always going to have their own way of doing things and it’s fun because it’s so personal. I know everybody. I know everybody on there is one of those people who just knows how to capture their characters, their emotions, the way they live their lives. So I admire that.
This is probably my favorite class, and if you don’t enjoy that, then that’s cool. It’s just fun to see people that you know. But I also love the other people in there and I get really interested when I watch them. So then, once you get a feel for it, you can also be able to watch it all over again.
Do you think students should take this class? Tell me more!
I think so. Honestly this class for me is just so fun. It does what you need to do in the real world to be able to draw. You just pick a style and figure out the whole process. I love to do it—you can be self-directed, self-learning. You just use what you know. This is one of my favorites.
There are a lot of cool art classes, not sure what’s right for me.
This interview was conducted before the end of the course.
