How do you develop a drawing style? – Free Virtual Painting Classes

At a quick glance, it seems a natural extension of your other work. However, with practice, it often takes many hours to achieve it. It might take years before you reach a point that leaves you as the best-drawn character you’ve ever seen. So, don’t try that at home!

It isn’t as straightforward as it is for a painter or a sculptor who are already established.

“The trick is to keep an eye on how people are responding to your work,” says Vickers. “It might take time to develop a style, although your style probably won’t stick.” One of the first things you’re going to do has to be to develop and tweak your presentation of the work, which goes through many iterations before eventually coming to be something that you like.

But how do you go from sketch to painting?

While it seems a natural extension of your other work, you’d probably rather not do that. Especially if it means you end up as the same old ‘man in the darkroom’ that you’ve been for years, and if you’re not interested in doing any more sketches, at least no more drawings.

For most writers we might find that we can put in hours to make a great one-page story, but that same story that was great in the first draft for a novel, will not seem to be good enough in the next iteration if you don’t take the time to polish it. So by definition it won’t be good enough to sell for one of those books.

“Some people have the vision to put a book together and the confidence to put time and work into it, and to show it off. But when it comes to the process of becoming an author, it comes down to finding those people,” says Vickers.

“The best way to grow a writing career is to work on your technique, and to keep an eye on what it is that people think is great.”
