The City Council on Monday proposed $4.9 million in funding for a bikeway linking the West Oakland neighborhood with the Castro District, which is one of the most heavily built-up neighborhoods in the city.
Councilmember Desley Brooks, who was among those who first proposed the project last year, said at the presentation that she’s thrilled by the response from the community and is hopeful more money is still coming.
“This really reflects just that community engagement process we started on the bike lanes,” said Brooks. “As a result of feedback I received from this community … I am hopeful that this is the path that we are all going to take as Oakland takes strides towards equity and inclusion.”
The funding would go toward construction of the San Pablo Avenue bike lanes and the construction of a bicycle pedestrian bridge over San Pablo Avenue to connect the bike lanes to the Oakland Army base.
Last summer, the board of the West Oakland Urban Land Bank approved a plan to build the bike lanes and crosswalk, which the City Council voted to put up for public input last year.
There are currently two bike lanes along San Pablo, with plans to build a third lane on the west side of San Pablo Avenue.
The bridge project, which will span over the existing San Pablo Avenue overpass, was also approved by the Urban Land Bank last fall. It includes a pedestrian bridge over San Pablo Avenue on both sides of the road, as well as sidewalks, an underground bike lane, lighting and traffic signals.
Aldermen voted last January to provide $4 million in grants to a project to build the bridge project.
The West Oakland Urban Land Bank, with support from the city and the BART Board, is responsible for providing neighborhood revitalization money for projects including the East West Expressway Express. That money comes out of the city’s general fund and is meant to go to the neighborhood.
