An older, heavy-coated, large breed like a dachshund, German shepherd, or Labrador Retriever. They also excel at playing, fetching, digging, and even foraging. The main thing to look for in a dog is to make sure your breed is not a “one size fits all” one.
A smaller breed, like a poodle, may not enjoy training as much as a long-haired breed like a Doberman.
Another thing to consider is that a dog like a poodle is often more active for his size than a Labrador Retriever. Also, many breeders sell a dog that looks just like a poodle if the dog is very young. In fact, at the age of 5 months it’s normal for a poodle to be the dominant dog in any given room.
When choosing a puppy, make sure you’re looking for a dog that’s able to handle the most basic tasks, with the least amount of fuss.
Puppies from large breeder or rescue organisations with lots of work-related issues to be overcome may be more interested in training or obedience. It can be hard to decide if your dog will thrive on training and is good for a general-purpose family home. In that case a short-haired dog like a Golden, a chow mix, a Doberman, etc. can be a good choice. A good breed like a Shar Pei, a Chihuahua, or even a Poodle can benefit from some training and can be used as a more general-purpose dog. Some owners use them as family members so it’s important to get a balanced type of dog. A Doberman and Rottweiler have a lot of training potential and may have other skills they enjoy. But a poodle or Golden Retriever are the main dogs I recommend for the home.
Do you have a training background and want to build it up for your dogs?
You can build your experience from a young age, but a bit experience with training and working can benefit your dog immensely if you’re serious about building up his potential.
Many trainers prefer puppies from rescue organisations and large breeding centers, as they’re often more responsible. However, the breed has a reputation as being a more demanding breed, so I think it’s important to look for a mix or cross for your new pup. A mix can be just as tough as any other dog, but it also has
