The player in the Pokémon League
The Pokémon League (Japanese: ポケモンレーション Pokémon Rōmaji: Pokémon Ryūsei) is the central headquarters of Team Plasma, the organization under the command of Giovanni. The player first appeared in Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, where they were chosen to defeat and capture Team Aqua. They were then forced to battle in the second Gym, against the rival trio led by Red’s Squirtle and Green’s Ditto. Once the Trainer is promoted in Emerald, they move to the Indigo League and fight Team Plasma’s new members. In Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, they once again confront them in the rematch in the Emerald Cup, where the players battle again as Platinum and the main story continues.
In the games
The player can battle in a Pokémon League Battle in all three games. In all games, the player has to go to the Gym Leader’s room and open the door at the side of the Gym to access the Gym. The Gym Leader will then appear inside, but his or her Pokémon are optional to the player.
Each Pokémon League Battle has five rounds. After the battle occurs, the player receives a point for the Pokémon defeated and a point for their Pokémon recovered, in exchange for which the winner gains the Trainer Championship Ribbon. If the player fails to battle in four rounds, they will receive a Game Freak penalty.
Unlike in the main series, the Trainer Championship cannot be won. Instead, if the player’s Pokémon is transferred into a Gym that has the same leader, they will battle in a later Gym match until there are no more of them in the battle.
In the events of Pokémon Platinum and Platinum: The Second Generation and Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, this battle will replace the Trainer Challenge as the main objective in Gym battles. However, it will still require the player to battle in four rounds and will still award points for the Pokémon defeated and any Pokémon recovered.
In HeartGold and SoulSilver, the player is able to choose who they want to battle in the Gym battle, regardless of the Trainer’s order until there are no more Pokémon remaining in the Gym.
