An Israeli soldier is seen during an Israeli military drill in the Israeli-occupied West Bank city of Nablus, Thursday, Nov. 13, 2016. Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas met Sunday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as part of efforts to bolster the Palestinian Authority’s ability to govern the West Bank, a senior Palestinian official said.

Israeli officials say that while a peace accord with the Palestinians is still far off that could be reached by December, Israeli officials say that at this point, the Palestinians are at the “tipping point.”

The Palestinians now appear to have turned on their negotiating partners with a demand that is as unrealistic as it is unacceptable — to reach a two-state solution based on a pre-1967 border, without recognizing Israel.

The demands made by a coalition led by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas go in this direction: Israel should withdraw from the occupied West Bank. The West Bank is to be left as part of an independent Palestinian state.

The two-state solution was supposed to be on the table when negotiations over the Israeli-Palestinian conflict got underway after Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 war and Israeli settlers were expelled from it.

But when Palestinians took over the Gaza Strip from Israel in 2007, the Israeli government was quick to try and halt the process by establishing an apartheid system that discriminates on the basis of ethnicity and religion.

But, even though Israel has agreed to an independence for Gaza, the government is willing to accept the terms of a Palestinian state based on pre-1967 lines — including the establishment of a demilitarized zone along the pre-1967 line between Israel and Gaza.

Israel has also agreed to the two-state solution on the condition that the Palestinian Authority not make “direct” concessions to Israel on the border between Israel and the Palestinians — a precondition that even former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert rejected.

A year ago, President Abbas presented an alternative proposal that called for an autonomous Palestine, where Palestinians would have control over all public services, like schools, parks and security measures.

Abbas, who had just returned from a meeting with Netanyahu in Switzerland, asked for Netanyahu’s response. However, Netanyahu refused to respond, saying that any such proposal would be rejected.

Now, two months into his second term,
